online payments for irs
I got a letter in the mail from the IRS stating I owe $70 on November 1st. I mailed check out November 2nd…?

The check still has not cleared to this day. It is to the state of NJ. I called up the IRS and they said it can take 2 months to clear??? I just noticed that I could have made a payment online via echeck, which was not stated on the letter I received. If I pay now with echeck and they wind up finally receiving my check in the mail and cash that too, will I be able to get a refund? Should I wait another couple of weeks? How can they let checks just sit there for 2 months? I don’t know what to do. Help.
Jesus Christ, I called up the number on the letter I received. IRS, State of NJ, it’s the same. I followed the instructions on the letter to a T. Come on, man.

Don’t fret about it! It takes them forever to go through all the mail they receive. If you mailed your check out a day after it was due, nothing will happen. If you delay it for an extended period of time, there can be interest and penalties but you didn’t so don’t worry. And don’t pay it twice because it’ll take forever for you to get your refund back.

Just wanted to add that when I owed money to the IRS it was just a little under a thousand dollars. Took me a long time to pay it off (I was still a teenager and made a big mistake on filling out my tax forms). Nothing happened to me except some interest and late fees. You’ll be fine.
